The silk monarch butterfly dress design was created for a competition and helped transform Luly Yang from a graphic designer to an internationally-known designer of couture. Though she has created many other beautiful styles, the butterfly dress holds lasting fascination.
It's a monarch butterfly translated to silk; all orange and red and black and white, with tiny crystals embedded in the fabric and soft black feathers tucked in along the strapless top. Its seaming is diagonal, whirling around the body as if chasing it; its skirt is multipaneled and seems to float, like it's hovering over a blossom. It is a dress to die for!.
It is my understanding that this dress was inspired by a very similar gown that was featured on the cover of Couture magazine in October 1968.
Even though the dress is not really an original, it does not take away from the fact that this is a breathtaking gown.
