Piercings: Belly Buttons

It was the 1990s. The era of A-Line mini dresses and underskirt style short dresses worn over bodysuits or T-Shirts and music scene-inspired cut-off jeans. It was also the time when exposing your mid-riff became super popular.

There was Julia Roberts baring her belly as the happy hooker in “Pretty Woman” and uber-super model Cindy Crawford flashing her navel that seemed to start the trend but it was Britney Spears who made this mid-riff trend a true craze. The video of “Baby One More Time” shows 16 year old Britney wearing braids and a school girl outfit that left no doubt as to the answer to the age old question, “innie or outie?”

With the release of her second album, “Oops! I Did It Again,” Britney took the mid-riff thing to a new level – navel piercing. Sure, piercing started to become popular with the rise of the Indie and Grunge movements, but it was Britney who made it a true fashion trend.

I remember watching some MTV awards show when Britney took the stage and I saw a little something sparkling from her stomach. Britney had gotten her belly button pierced and by default, I wanted to get mine done too.

Pretty soon afterwards, I did!

I wasn't alone.
It seemed like getting you navel tapped was almost a ritual of girlhood.
I am still glad that I did.

Fortunately, this trend seems to be here to stay. Unlike tats, which you are stuck with forever and they can distort over time as your weight changes, belly jewelry can be changed.

Pretty much every singer, actress, or performer with even a halfway decent tummy shows jewelry dangling from their navel.

I think that just about every sissy needs to have her belly button pierced. I really can't think of a good reason why not.

If you have a pierced belly and want to show it off, send it along to me and I'll post it!

Did you know that belly piercings date back to at least the time of the ancient Egyptians?  Back then in Egypt, only the Pharoahs were allowed belly button rings and anyone else wearing one was sentenced to death!
